The Rubik's Cube was a sensation in the early 1980's. Craig Nichols, magician, and assistant to Brad Zinn, created the magical mid-air “solving” of the Rubik's Cube in late January 1982. He showed it to Brad Zinn who then premiered it in his show at The Scottsdale Shadows Recreation Center (Scottsdale, Arizona) on February 13th, 1982. Brad performed it in every one of his stage shows for the next eight years. Doug Henning saw it and included it in his NBC-TV Special, and from there it became an international success. Craig Nichols eventually sold the sales and manufacturing rights to Daryl Martinez. Another local magician, Rene Guerra, created several Rubik's Cube effects like the “Die Box Rubik's Cube” and others. So Rubik's Cube magic was indeed born in Phoenix, Arizona!
